Telangana Students Garjana

The Joint Action Committee of Telangana Students has asked all the political parties clarify their stand on separate Telangana ahead of the crucial meeting convened by Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram in New Delhi on January 5. The JAC has resolved to continue its agitation across the region till the Central Government introduces a Bill on Telangana in Parliament, incorporating a specific timeframe for carving out the separate State. The JAC threatened that it would not allow the leaders who speak against Telangana in the January 5 meeting to move freely in the region.

Massive turnout

The JAC leaders were addressing a massive gathering of students from the 10 districts of Telangana that thronged the “Vidyarthi Garjana” public meeting at Osmania University campus here on Sunday. The JAC gave a call for ‘rail roko’ and blockade of National Highways on January 5 in support of the demand for statehood to the region. Threatening to launch an agitation on the lines of Gujjars in Rajasthan, the JAC leaders said they could not be cowed down by the government which was bent on using lathis and bullets against the peacefully agitating students.

They questioned the decision of the Telangana Ministers to withdraw their resignations and said the students of the region would ensure their re-election. Amid chants of ‘Jai Telangana’ and songs rendered by cultural troupes from the region, the meeting resolved to demand that the government lift the cases registered against students since the agitation commenced on November 29 in addition to providing ex gratia of Rs. 10 lakh and a job each to families of people who died in the course of the agitation.

The meeting was devoid of representatives of any political parties in line with the direction given by the High Court even as the speakers who addressed the gathering wanted the students to lead the agitation to ensure its success. Freedom fighter Konda Lakshman Bapuji cautioned students against allowing interference by political parties as only student force was capable of taking it to a fruitful conclusion.
